Dutch pharmaceutical company Pfizer said Wednesday that it will pay $150 million to settle a lawsuit that it plans to pursue in federal court over allegations it illegally marketed erectile dysfunction drugs to children and adolescents.
Pfizer's agreement comes after a federal judge in Manhattan ruled in April that the company needed to make the drug a blockbuster to promote its sales of Viagra, a popular prescription drug for erectile dysfunction.
Pfizer says it will pay $150 million, a sum that it says will reimburse customers who purchase the drugs and "support the litigation." The amount is part of a settlement reached by the U. S. Department of Justice in May that sought to block Pfizer's legal action.
The case, brought by Teva Pharmaceuticals, has been filed by a New Jersey woman who claimed that Pfizer violated a settlement agreement she signed with her father. In addition to her complaint, the woman claimed that Pfizer illegally marketed her to children and adolescents.
The woman is now seeking to force Pfizer to pay for the damages that she suffered after taking the drugs, which include erectile dysfunction drugs called Viagra.
In a lawsuit filed Wednesday by Teva Pharmaceuticals, Pfizer said that the company will pay for the $150 million in damages that the woman claimed were "severe medical damages" that it is owed. The claim is being investigated by the U. Justice Department and is being filed in federal court in New York.
Pfizer also claims that the woman's family was harmed by the drugs because the drugs caused her to be unable to sleep and were not effective in treating her condition.
In addition to the woman's complaint, a Pfizer spokesman said that the company will "refer the matter to the U. Court of Justice for appropriate relief." The company is in talks with the government and is seeking to obtain appropriate monetary damages for damages associated with the FDA's ongoing probe of the Viagra and Cialis cases.
The federal judge ordered Pfizer to pay $150 million to the woman for "severe medical damages" for her injuries.The woman had claimed that Pfizer knew the drugs had caused her to have low blood pressure, but the drug did not appear to affect the heart health of the woman, she said. The woman also claimed that Viagra was a "disproportionate" medicine that was given to her by her father and that she needed the drugs to treat her heart condition, she said.
In April, the woman was diagnosed with premature ejaculation after she took Viagra, the company said. The FDA has not approved Viagra for men, and Pfizer is not expected to make Viagra available to women for a prolonged period of time.
The FDA asked for a statement that it will take into consideration whether the woman had experienced any adverse side effects during treatment and whether any information on the FDA's safety or efficacy issues was shared to the company. In response to the request, Pfizer said in a statement that it will make "necessary and reasonable efforts" to address the issue.Pfizer and its stockholders have a common interest in holding the stockholders' equity at risk, the FDA said.Pfizer shares were trading at $22.59 per share, down 2.9 percent at $15.55.In a statement to Reuters, the company said: "We are pleased to make our agreement with Pfizer with the assistance of our partner and the United States Department of Justice. Viagra is the brand name of the medication in the world. The erectile dysfunction drugs are also widely used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension and other conditions related to the heart. Sildenafil was originally tested in clinical trials for the treatment of pulmonary hypertension. The drug is also being studied in erectile dysfunction.
Researchers from the U. S. National Institutes of Health found that sildenafil was a safe, effective, and potentially life-saving treatment for people with erectile dysfunction.
The drug has not been approved for sale in the United States by Pfizer. However, Pfizer will continue to manufacture sildenafil and will supply it to the U. market.
The drug is marketed under the brand name Viagra®.
Viagra® works by increasing blood flow to the penis. This increases the firm’s ability to achieve and maintain an erection. However, the drug does not treat erectile dysfunction.
In one study, researchers found that sildenafil may improve symptoms of erectile dysfunction in people with the condition. The results were published in the July issue of, the journal of the American Medical Association.
It is the first study to look at sildenafil’s effects in the United States. The drug was prescribed to millions of men in the United States.
Viagra® was first sold in 1998. The drug was first used to treat erectile dysfunction in men. The study showed that men who took sildenafil were at an increased risk for erectile dysfunction.
The researchers say they found that sildenafil was not associated with increased rates of sexual performance or impotence.
Sildenafil may also be useful in treating pulmonary hypertension. The study also found that sildenafil is not associated with the symptoms of heart disease, such as chest pain, shortness of breath, and irregular heartbeat. Sildenafil is only approved to be used as an ED treatment in men.
Viagra® is not currently available in the United States. However, Pfizer has notified patients in the United States that they will be treated with the drug for erectile dysfunction.
The U. Food and Drug Administration and Pfizer are seeking regulatory approval for a generic version of Viagra® in the United States.
